Havaianas Summer Mix Vol.3 - Get Low

Five ways music can make you happier

1.       Our body responds to the music we listen to. This allows us to be able to change our mood. When we change our mood through music, the body goes through a process of entrainment where it tries to match our heartbeat to the rhythm of the music. Therefore, if you’re feeling down, while listening to very fast music may be too much, listening to more upbeat music will help your body respond in a positive way. Try “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. Seriously.

2.       Music has been shown to help us feel connected and part of something. If you’re feeling down, isolated or disconnected, listening to music can ground you in the present moment and make you feel connected to something outside yourself. If you can relate to the lyrics, this can really help you relate to something and get outside of your own mind.

3.       It’s hard to be happy when you can’t sleep. Light music can be really helpful when trying to fall asleep, especially if you’re having trouble getting some shuteye. It’s been shown to help adults with insomnia fall asleep faster. Go for slower ballads and instrumental songs to avoid getting caught up in the song lyrics.
4.       Stress is the enemy of happiness. It’s been shown that listening to and playing music can actually lower the levels of the stress hormone cortisol in the body. This is why music therapy can be so useful in treating depression and anxiety.

5.       So we’ve seen that music can reduce the stressful hormones, but it can also increase the happy ones. Listening to music has been shown to increase levels of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is an important neurotransmitter in the brain and in the stomach that regulates things like mood, appetite, and even sleep. It’s also been seen in brain scans of those listening to music that it increases levels of dopamine in the pleasure centres of the brain.
